UN Security Council briefed on Cyprus reports and settlement efforts

New York, United States. UN Special Representative in Cyprus Khassim Diagne briefed members of the UN Security Council behind closed doors on Thursday on the secretary-general’s latest reports on Cyprus.

According to the Cyprus News Agency, Diagne highlighted efforts by the UN secretary-general’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, to engage with both sides and support the resumption of negotiations.


Support for agreed settlement framework

The hour-and-a-half briefing included reported support from France, Latvia, Greece and Denmark, as well as the United States, for a Cyprus settlement based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality.

Concerns raised by Pakistan and Somalia

Pakistan and Somalia reportedly referred to what they described as economic inequalities and conditions of isolation affecting the Turkish Cypriot community.
