Vehicle numbers in north rise by more than 86,000 in three years, report says

Nicosia, Cyprus. The number of vehicles in the north has risen sharply over the past three years, according to a report by Kibris newspaper citing data from authorities. Total vehicles increased by 86,131 between 2022 and 2025, reaching 447,592.


Overall growth and annual increases

The report said annual growth averaged 25,000 to 30,000 vehicles. It said a record increase of 31,295 was recorded in 2025 alone, representing an annual rise of around 7 per cent.

Petrol and diesel sales

Sales of petrol and diesel vehicles rose by 18 to 21 per cent over the period, according to the report.

Electric and hybrid vehicle increases

The report said the most significant growth was in electric and hybrid vehicles. Electric vehicles increased from 348 in 2022 to 2,254 in 2025, a rise of approximately 547 per cent. Hybrid vehicles rose from 1,270 to 13,674, a surge of 977 per cent.

Month-on-month rise

The report noted steady month-on-month growth, saying vehicle numbers rose by 9,593 in four months last year, from April to August.

New and second-hand vehicles

Of the total vehicles currently on the roads, 300,046 are second-hand and 122,405 are new, the report said.

Motorcycle growth

Motorcycle use also increased, rising by around 16.7 per cent from 35,394 in 2022 to 41,310 in 2025, according to the report.
