Nicosia, Cyprus. Veterinary services have introduced a new digital system to manage movement permits linked to foot and mouth disease restrictions, replacing paper-based procedures with electronic applications and QR code verification. The platform covers permits for the movement of animals, agricultural products and professionals operating within restricted zones.
Electronic permit management
Veterinary services said the platform allows for the electronic issuance and management of permits and is intended to improve the speed and accuracy of processing requests. Officials said it enables faster application submission and immediate verification of approvals through QR codes at checkpoints.
Range of users and movements
According to officials, the system applies to a wide range of users, including farmers, veterinarians and livestock breeders. Permits are issued for both nationwide movements and localised transfers within containment zones.
Checkpoint verification
The system replaces the previous paper-based process in which requests were handled individually and introduces automated verification at checkpoints. Authorities said inspectors can now confirm permits instantly using QR codes at fixed control points and across the road network, reducing delays and improving consistency in enforcement.
Development and traceability
The platform was developed in collaboration with the KIOS Research and Innovation Centre of Excellence. Veterinary services said the system is intended to enhance traceability and coordination, contributing to the monitoring of the movements of people, animals and products from the point of departure to the point of destination.
Monitoring compliance
The system integrates movement tracking for vehicles transporting livestock, feed and milk, as well as individuals moving within designated zones. Authorities said this supports more consistent monitoring of compliance with restrictive measures and helps control disinfection points.
