Von der Leyen warns EU against return to Russian fossil fuels to curb energy prices

Brussels, Belgium. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Europe would make a strategic blunder if it sought to curb soaring energy prices by returning to Russian fossil fuels. She made the remarks on Wednesday in a speech to the European Parliament.

Von der Leyen said that, in the current crisis, some argue the EU should abandon its long-term strategy and go back to Russian fossil fuels, but she said this would be a strategic blunder.

Measures under preparation to lower prices

Von der Leyen said the EU was preparing options to lower energy prices, including better use of power purchasing agreements, state aid measures, and gas price subsidies or caps.
