Wolt drivers in Cyprus begin strike over delivery rates and working conditions

Limassol, Cyprus. Drivers working for delivery platform Wolt have launched immediate strike action over working conditions and low delivery rates, with the protest expected to last up to a week, several drivers told the Cyprus Mail on Friday.

Drivers cite falling fares and low income

Drivers said the strike was driven by what they described as continuously decreasing ride fares and a lack of fair income for the work performed.
One driver said that despite working from morning until evening, the pay received was extremely low and not justified.

Participation claims and expected duration

A driver said the issues affected a large number of Wolt couriers and that more than 500 people had confirmed participation in the strike.
He said the strike was ongoing and would continue in the coming days if no action was taken by the company.

Other platforms not involved

The group said riders from competitor platforms Bolt and Foody were not taking part, adding that, to their knowledge, Wolt drivers receive significantly lower rates.
A driver said the riders were mostly young and working long hours daily.

Drivers remain anonymous

The riders said they wished to remain anonymous and present themselves as a group, and said they would not answer questions about their age, names or origin.

Company response and employment structure

Wolt spokesperson for Cyprus and Greece Akis Stamoulis told the Cyprus Mail he was aware of the strike but not of a large number of drivers participating.
He said that, to his knowledge, 20 people in Limassol had announced a strike.
Stamoulis added that, unlike in most countries where the company operates, around 80 per cent of drivers in Cyprus are not directly employed by Wolt but work through third-party companies.

What steps do you think should be taken to address delivery drivers’ concerns about rates and working conditions?
