Woman arrested after animal products found at Dherynia crossing

Dherynia, Cyprus. A 43-year-old woman was arrested after customs officers found about 28 kilograms of animal products in her vehicle as she attempted to cross southwards at the Dherynia crossing point, the customs department said on Monday.

Products seized

The vehicle was stopped for checks at the crossing point. Officers found eight kilograms of fresh chicken meat cut into pieces, eight kilograms of chicken offal and four whole fresh chickens weighing a total of 8.75 kilograms.

They also found 48 quail eggs, 700 grams of cheese, one litre of kefir, 2.25 kilograms of yoghurt and 275 grams of sausages.

Arrest and release

The woman was arrested and then re-arrested during the vehicle search after displaying what the customs department described as inappropriate and aggressive behaviour towards the officer conducting the inspection.

All products were seized and will be destroyed. The woman was later released following an out-of-court settlement.
