Maumere, Indonesia. At least five people died after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake and dozens of aftershocks struck off eastern Indonesia early on Saturday, according to the governor of East Nusa Tenggara Province.

East Nusa Tenggara Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena said five people died after rubble collapsed while they slept.

The national disaster mitigation agency, BNPB, reported one death and four injuries.

Tsunami warning lifted

Tsunami waves of less than one metre were recorded in several areas. The tsunami warning was lifted about three hours after the earthquake.

Damage and evacuations

Video verified by Reuters showed parts of a building collapsing into dust and rubble at a port in Maumere, the main town in Sikka Regency on Flores Island, as people screamed and ran into the street.

Strong shaking

The Indonesian geophysics agency BMKG recorded the first quake at 4:58 a.m. local time, at a depth of 15 kilometres, followed by several aftershocks.

BNPB said strong shaking was felt across East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara and parts of South Sulawesi, with residents in several areas reporting shaking lasting about one minute.

A 51-year-old Talibura resident, Nona, said 13 people inside her home ran outside after the strong tremor.
