Episkopi, Cyprus. British base police are appealing for witnesses after 76-year-old Demetris Potamitis was killed in a traffic collision on the Limassol-Paphos highway near the Episkopi tunnel last Wednesday.

Potamitis was struck by a minibus while retrieving a refrigerator that had fallen from his double-cabin vehicle onto the road.


Collision circumstances

Potamitis was travelling towards Paphos with his grandson when the appliance fell from the vehicle about one kilometre after the tunnel.

He returned to the carriageway to retrieve the refrigerator and was struck by a passing minibus carrying passengers towards Paphos airport. He was pronounced dead at the scene, while his grandson was not injured.

Police investigation

The minibus driver was arrested and underwent alcohol and drug testing, which found no trace of any substance. A statement was taken and the driver was released pending further investigations.

British base police asked anyone who witnessed the collision or has information, including relevant dashcam footage, to contact investigators on 1443 or 25 967227.
