Nicosia, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides has signed a joint letter with 16 other EU member states ahead of the next phase of negotiations on the European Union’s Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for 2028–2034.

Funding priorities

In a post on X on Saturday, the Cyprus EU presidency said the countries’ common position was that Europe must allocate sufficient resources to its new priorities while preserving funding for cohesion policy and the Common Agricultural Policy.

For Cyprus, the presidency said, strong agricultural and cohesion policies meant balanced development, support for the countryside and the primary sector, and stronger competitiveness.

Basis for further negotiations

The presidency highlighted the 17 member states’ shared position that the total MFF amount reflected in the negotiating framework achieved during the Cyprus presidency remained a strong basis for the next stages of negotiations.

It described that position as substantial recognition of the Cyprus presidency’s work and contribution to shaping the next European budget.
