Clea Hadjistefanou-Papaellina takes over as Deputy Culture Minister

Nicosia, Cyprus. Newly appointed Deputy Culture Minister Clea Hadjistefanou-Papaellina said culture must be “open to all” as she took over the portfolio from outgoing deputy minister Vasiliki Kassianidou on Thursday.

She thanked President Nikos Christodoulides for his confidence and described culture as the foundation of Cyprus’ identity, history and creative perspective.

Culture policy goals

Papaellina said the aim was for culture to embrace every creator, support artistic expression, highlight cultural heritage and create opportunities for new generations.

She thanked Kassianidou for her contribution, saying efforts to strengthen culture and support artists represented a valuable legacy for the future.

Outgoing minister’s assessment

Kassianidou said the deputy ministry had developed significantly since its establishment in 2023, with stronger structures, a clear strategy and a greater international presence.

She highlighted progress on the new archaeological museum, the repatriation of hundreds of antiquities and work on legislation governing the status of artists.

Kassianidou said culture should be at the centre of public policy and regarded not as a luxury, but as a foundation of democracy, social cohesion, education and development.
