CYMEPA calls for public input on shipping’s green and digital transition
CYMEPA has invited the public to take part in a survey on shipping’s transition and environmental challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association (CYMEPA) secretary general Michalis Iereidis has called on the public to participate in a survey on community views of shipping’s green and digital transition and environmental challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean.
He said climate change was already affecting coastal communities, the economy and daily life across the region.
People-centred transition
Iereidis said shipping, a major pillar of the global and local economy, was undergoing a historic transformation through the adoption of alternative fuels, digital applications and emission-reduction technologies.
“This shift is not simply a technical or business adjustment, but an imperative for the future of our environment,” he stated.
He said the transition should not be considered an issue solely for shipping companies, ports and technical experts, as it also directly affected port cities, coastal residents and society.
“A truly sustainable green transition must, above all, be people-centred,” he added.
METAVASEA project
The survey forms part of the five-year METAVASEA project, in which CYMEPA participates as a partner under the coordination of the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA), with support from the Lloyd’s Register Foundation.
According to Iereidis, the project aims to support shipping’s green and digital transition while placing people at the centre of the process.
