Cyprus and Australia explore AI, research and Horizon Europe cooperation
Cyprus and Australia discussed closer cooperation in artificial intelligence, research, emerging technologies and future Horizon Europe projects.

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus and Australia are seeking to deepen cooperation in artificial intelligence, research and emerging technologies, Chief Scientist Demetris Skourides said following a meeting with Australian High Commissioner Emily Pugin.
The discussions also examined opportunities linked to Australia’s forthcoming association with the EU’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme.
Research and innovation links
Skourides said the meeting continued contacts established during his first mission to Australia in September 2025, when he met government, scientific and academic representatives.
The latest talks focused on strengthening links between the countries’ research communities, universities and innovation ecosystems. They also explored cooperation in climate resilience, sustainability and the use of emerging technologies to address practical challenges.
Horizon Europe participation
A key development since Skourides’ visit to Australia has been Canberra’s move towards association with Horizon Europe, the EU’s €93.5 billion research and innovation programme.
The European Commission and Australia concluded negotiations on June 9. Australia is set to associate with Pillar II of Horizon Europe, which covers digital technologies, industry and space, climate and energy, health and civil security.
Australia is completing domestic treaty procedures, while its Department of Industry, Science and Resources has said Australian researchers and organisations are expected to participate under the 2027 work programme from January 1, 2027.
Skourides said the development could support direct partnerships between researchers, universities and companies in Cyprus and Australia.
Artificial intelligence cooperation
Artificial intelligence was also central to the discussions, including Cyprus’ work on its National AI Strategy 2032.
The meeting examined possible cooperation with Australia in areas including AI ethics and technology transfer.
