Energy was the main driver of the euro area-wide increase, with annual inflation estimated at 14.3 per cent in August, compared with 10.3 per cent in July.
Services remained the second-largest contributor, although their annual inflation rate eased to 3.0 per cent from 3.3 per cent in July.
