Cyprus author presents ‘Book of Spells’ as mental health guide
A Cyprus-based former advertising creative has published a book drawing on therapeutic practices, while discussing spirituality and personal growth.

Nicosia, Cyprus. A Cyprus-based former advertising creative has published The Magic We Create: The Book of Spells, describing its practices as research-based tools intended to support mental health.
The 43-year-old author, who writes under the pseudonym Dorothy Howls, said the book was reviewed by a doctor of psychology before publication.
Book and approach
The pocket-sized hardback, featuring a sea-blue and gold cover, is presented as a “Book of Spells”. Dorothy said she chose the term because she considers it comparable to religious prayers and repeated affirmations.
She said the book’s practices are based on research and methods used in therapists’ offices, rather than imaginary or supernatural forces.
Dorothy, who is Polish and has lived in Cyprus for 20 years, described herself as “quite agnostic” and said she does not view the book as promoting an external spiritual force.
“The magic is within you,” she said, adding that people must use neuroplasticity to change their thinking. She described therapy as the only religion she believes in.
Career change and mental health work
Dorothy previously worked as a creative director in advertising and is currently on a sabbatical that has lasted about one and a half years. During that period, she made a short film, trained AI models and wrote the book.
She said she hopes to create “a body of work that will support general mental health” and described her intended role as that of a mental-health ally.
Spiritual exploration
Dorothy was joined in Athalassa park by her friend Kat Antoniou, 36, who was not involved in the book and had not read it. The two met while working in the corporate sector and became close friends.
Antoniou, an accountant who was born in Moldova and grew up in Cyprus, said she has stepped back from full-time corporate life after moving to a village.
She described her upbringing as “very strict corporate” and said her interest in understanding why things happen led her to explore spirituality. Her studies and certifications have included reiki, pranic healing and crystal therapies, as well as metaphysical and occult subjects including theosophy, telepathy, quantum jumps, tarot, shamanism and alchemy.
Antoniou said that, on the question of method, she agreed with Dorothy’s approach.
