Nicosia, Cyprus. Head of the Cyprus blood bank Androula Panayiotou appealed to the public on Monday to donate blood, warning that supplies were at borderline levels and that a difficult period lay ahead.

She said approximately 350 bottles of blood were needed each day to meet nationwide demand, while planned donations indicated collections of only 190 to 200 bottles per day.

Summer donation concerns

Panayiotou said satisfactory quantities had been collected over the weekend, but the outlook for the coming days was concerning.

Recent supplies had been maintained partly through organised blood donations by the army, she said, but these collections had now been completed.

She added that organised donations at other locations were significantly limited during the summer holidays, as many people were away and workplaces were closed.

Appeal to donors

Panayiotou called on residents to set aside time to donate blood, saying the process took no longer than 15 minutes and could help save lives.

Blood donation centres operate at the Engomi Health Centre, telephone 22 809098; Geri Health Centre, telephone 22 309221; Limassol Old Hospital, telephone 25 730277; Larnaca General Hospital, telephone 24 800402; Paphos Blood Donation Centre, telephone 26 306409; and Paralimni, Sotiros 2, telephone 99 287584.
