Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus recorded 34 bounced cheques with a combined value of €97,622 in September 2026, a year-on-year increase of 47.8 per cent in their number, according to data the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) released on Wednesday. Despite September’s increase, the nine-month totals remained below those for the equivalent period in 2025.

September figures and register entries

The CBC reported that September’s total compared with 23 cheques worth €74,655 a year earlier, with their combined value rising by 30.8 per cent.

The number also increased from August, which recorded 27 cheques totalling €27,092. September’s value exceeded three times that amount, the figures showed.

According to the central bank, the September cases appeared on the preliminary list maintained within the Central Information Register (CIR), which covers issuers of bounced cheques. Nine persons were added to that list during September: seven legal entities and two individuals.

Separately, the CBC figures showed that CIR registrations rose to 18 persons in September. These comprised seven legal entities, two individuals and nine individuals who control legal entities.

Nine-month cheque totals fall as registrations rise

For January–September 2026, the central bank recorded 162 bounced cheques totalling €413,203. The equivalent 2025 figures were 184 cheques and €440,146.

According to the data, this amounted to declines of 12 per cent in cheque numbers and 6.1 per cent in their aggregate value.

CIR registrations nevertheless increased over the nine-month period, reaching 104 persons against 87 a year earlier, a rise of 19.5 per cent, the CBC reported.
