Cyprus emerging as European space ecosystem player, Damianou says

Paris, France. Cyprus has evolved from a user of space services into an emerging player in the European space ecosystem, Research Deputy Minister Nicodemos Damianou said following his visit to the International Space Summit.

He cited a joint declaration signed with France as a framework for closer cooperation in Earth observation, space science and satellite communications.

Space sector development

Damianou said modern policymaking is increasingly linked to research and development in space, including efforts to understand climate change, respond to natural disasters, strengthen connectivity and industrial capabilities, protect critical infrastructure, support innovation and bolster defence capabilities, technological dominance and strategic autonomy.

He said Cyprus had become an associate member of the European Space Agency and made strategic investments in ground-based satellite infrastructure, facilities and secure connectivity.

These developments have been accompanied by innovation-focused initiatives, including the space business incubation centre which opened in Limassol last year.

Cooperation with France

The joint declaration signed with France last week provides for closer cooperation in Earth observation, space science and satellite communications, Damianou said.

He said it also lays the foundations for the exchange of know-how and experience, encourages participation in joint research and industrial initiatives, and strengthens coordination within the European Space Agency and other European and international organisations and fora.

Damianou added that Cyprus is establishing itself as a reliable partner in space innovation, Earth observation and services using space technologies in a region of strategic importance.

He also said relations between Cyprus and France continue to deepen in strategic areas.
