Nicosia, Cyprus. Income inequality in Cyprus exceeded the EU average in 2025, with Eurostat reporting a Gini coefficient of 31.2 against the bloc’s 29.2 in figures released on Friday. Separate earnings data published by the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat) showed significant disparities in pay across the island.

Cyprus and the EU comparison

Eurostat’s figures indicated that income distribution in Cyprus was less equal than in the EU overall. The bloc’s coefficient fell slightly from 29.4 in 2024 to 29.2 in 2025.

Cyprus’ reading of 31.2 was marginally lower than Greece’s 31.6, while Turkey’s coefficient was substantially higher at 43.9.

The Gini coefficient assesses the distribution of income within a population on a zero-to-100 scale. Zero denotes complete equality, with identical incomes for everyone; 100 denotes complete inequality, with all income going to a single person.

Differences among member states

The Eurostat data showed that EU coefficients spanned 23.0 to 37.7 in 2025. Slovakia had the most equal distribution at 23.0, ahead of Belgium with 23.4, the Czech Republic with 24.0, Slovenia with 24.6 and Poland with 24.9.

Bulgaria registered the greatest inequality at 37.7. Latvia followed with 35.6, then Lithuania with 35.5.

Earnings disparities in Cyprus

Cystat’s earnings figures for 2025 showed sizeable differences between average pay and median earnings. The data also highlighted pay gaps between women and men, alongside considerable differences by economic sector and nationality.
