Nicosia, Cyprus. Approximately 30 per cent of Cyprus’ territory is included in the Natura 2000 network, with 72 areas designated as special areas of conservation or protection, Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis told the House environment committee on Wednesday.

Environmental priorities

Senekis presented four main environmental priorities for the upcoming period: resilient forests and natural disaster prevention, resilient nature, a circular and competitive green economy, and sustainable management of natural and mineral resources.

A budget of €25.5 million has been allocated for the transition to a modern forest protection system.

Fisheries and Akamas

In fisheries and aquaculture, Senekis said the ministry aims to support incomes, strengthen competitiveness and maintain vibrant and sustainable coastal communities.

On Akamas, he said the ministry had revised its development plan to reduce its environmental footprint. New infrastructure has been reduced by around 700 square metres.

Waste and recycling plans

Senekis said a comprehensive viability study for a new network of waste management facilities is expected to be completed in 2028. The study will determine planning for the period from 2029 to 2035.

Efforts are also under way to establish smaller green points in mountainous and remote areas. State support for clean-up works at illegal dumps has totalled €2.22 million.

Climate action and raw materials

Senekis said 142 emissions allowance auctions had generated net revenues of €109.04 million for the Republic.

He also said geological suitability maps were being prepared and that studies were being launched for the development of a national critical raw materials strategy.
