Taranto, Italy. Cyprus concluded its participation in the 20th Mediterranean Games ‘Taranto 2026’ with seven gold, six silver and five bronze medals, marking its most successful performance in the history of the event.

The 18-medal total surpassed Cyprus’ previous best result at the Mediterranean Games and was achieved by a record delegation of 145 athletes competing in 24 sports.

Final medals

Cyprus’ participation ended on Wednesday, when Marios Georgiou won gold in the horizontal bar and silver in the parallel bars. Neofytos Kyriakou won bronze in the horizontal bar.

According to the Cyprus Olympic Committee, Georgiou has now won nine Mediterranean Games medals, making him the most decorated Cypriot athlete in the history of the event.

His four gold medals also make him the first Cypriot athlete to reach that total at the Games.

Closing ceremony

The 20th Mediterranean Games concluded with the ‘Mediterraneo in Festa’ closing ceremony at the Stadio Erasmo Iacovone in Taranto, which also hosted the opening ceremony.

The Games brought together athletes from 26 countries, with more than 4,000 competitors taking part across a range of sports.

The ceremony featured Rockin’1000, with 260 musicians forming what organisers described as a Mediterranean orchestra. The group performed an hour-long programme of well-known rock songs.

The Orchestra of Magna Grecia, as well as artists and music groups from Puglia, also participated in the ceremony.
