Nicosia, Cyprus. Four confirmed cases of West Nile virus have been recorded in Cyprus this summer, while two further probable cases are under investigation, the health ministry said on Tuesday. The confirmed cases are considered imported, and the ministry said the situation is under control.

Cases under investigation

Health ministry deputy director Elizavet Constantinou said the two probable cases require further laboratory testing to establish whether they meet the definition of a West Nile virus infection.

She said the number of confirmed cases had not resulted in a significant increase in hospitalisations.

Prevention measures

Constantinou said West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito and is not transmitted directly between people.

The ministry has increased its response measures, with health teams conducting spraying in areas where mosquito outbreaks have been identified.

Doctors have received updated guidance on symptoms and laboratory tests used to identify the virus, while teams handling blood samples have also been informed.

Advice for residents

Constantinou urged residents to take precautions against mosquito bites, particularly in areas where water is present.

She called for increased precautions for elderly people and other vulnerable groups, who face a higher risk of serious illness.

Most people infected with West Nile virus do not develop symptoms. Constantinou said 80 per cent or more of infections are asymptomatic, while only a small proportion develop into more serious illness.
