Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus recorded the lowest suicide rate in the European Union in 2023, with 3.5 deaths from intentional self-harm per 100,000 residents, compared with an EU average of 10.4.

Together with Greece and Malta, Cyprus was among the member states with the lowest rates, while Lithuania, Slovenia and Hungary recorded the highest.


EU figures

In 2023, 48,370 EU residents died as a result of intentional self-harm, accounting for 1 per cent of all deaths in the bloc.

Greece recorded a rate of 4.3 deaths per 100,000 residents and Malta 5.5. Lithuania recorded the highest rate at 18.8, followed by Slovenia at 16.4 and Hungary at 16.1.

Gender and age differences

The EU suicide death rate was higher among men, at 16.9 per 100,000 people, compared with 5 per 100,000 among women. Men accounted for 76.4 per cent of all suicide deaths in the EU.

Rates increased with age, from 0.2 per 100,000 among people younger than 15 to 17.3 per 100,000 among those aged 65 and over.

Rates were higher for men across all age groups except among children under 15, where rates were similar.
