Cyprus report on pet hotels expected in early September

Nicosia, Cyprus. A report on the status of pet hotels in Cyprus is expected to be completed in early September, Environment and Animal Welfare Commissioner Elias Myrianthous said on Wednesday.

The report will focus primarily on facilities accommodating dogs and is intended to provide authorities with a clearer record of the sector before possible regulatory changes are considered.

Sector record

Myrianthous said the report will record the number of pet hotels operating in Cyprus, including how many hold licences and how many operate without one.

He said he discussed the matter on Tuesday with the veterinary officer seconded to his office, who is responsible for preparing the report.

The aim is to establish a comprehensive record that will allow authorities to regulate animal boarding facilities more effectively, he added.

Completion timetable

The veterinary officer is currently working at the commissioner’s office one day a week until September 1, Myrianthous said.

Once she begins working full time at the office, the report is expected to be completed within the first 10 days of September.

Animal shelters

Asked whether his office had received complaints about poor treatment of animals at pet hotels, Myrianthous said he had not received any such reports or complaints since taking office.

He added that the lack of animal shelters was among the most pressing issues facing his office. The matter was raised during his first meetings with local authorities in Paphos, where discussions focused on plans to establish an animal shelter.

Similar issues exist in other districts, according to discussions with the veterinary officer, he said.
