Cyprus’ state workforce reached 53,747 employees in July 2026, up by 300 people, or 0.6 per cent, from 53,447 a year earlier, according to figures released by the Statistical Service (Cystat). The civil service remained the largest of the three services, despite a 1 per cent decrease in staff numbers to 22,978 from 23,208 a year earlier.

Permanent employees remained the largest employment category across the state workforce, rising by 0.3 per cent to 32,935 from 32,837.
Employees on indefinite-duration contracts recorded the strongest increase, rising by 1.7 per cent to 9,509 from 9,348. Fixed-term employment increased by 1.1 per cent to 4,578 from 4,527.
Hourly paid workers were the only category to decline overall, falling by 0.1 per cent to 6,725 from 6,735.
Civil service staffing
Within the civil service, permanent employees declined by 0.7 per cent to 11,851 from 11,931. Employees on indefinite-duration contracts fell by 2.7 per cent to 4,006 from 4,117.
Hourly paid workers decreased by 2.1 per cent to 5,725 from 5,848, while fixed-term employees rose by 6.4 per cent to 1,396 from 1,312.
