Washington, United States. Cyprus will attend a meeting of US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace as an observer, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Saturday. He said the government has received an invitation to participate in the meeting on Gaza on Thursday.

Invitation and Cyprus role

Speaking to the Cyrus News Agency, Letymbiotis said Cyprus’ participation reflects what he described as the country’s stable and active regional role since the start of the crisis, including initiatives and proposals to international partners. He said Cyprus, as the European Union member state closest to the region, is present in developments and contributes to stability and peace efforts.

Agenda and UN Security Council resolution

Letymbiotis said the meeting will examine the next steps for implementing Trump’s Plan, as adopted by the United Nations Security Council with Resolution 2803, based on proposals that have already been submitted.

Prior participation and representation

He said Cyprus participated in the Sharm el-Sheikh Summit and in the signing ceremony of the Agreement, during which President Nikos Christodoulides submitted a proposal related to implementing the Peace Plan. Letymbiotis said the level of representation will be determined in consultation with the organisers.

Creation of Trump’s Board of Peace

Letymbiotis said Trump’s Board of Peace was signed into existence during a ceremony at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on January 22.
