Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus’ unemployment rate declined to 3.6 per cent in the second quarter of 2026, from 4.3 per cent a year earlier, according to the state statistical service, Cystat. Employment continued to rise during the period.


Employment and labour force

The number of employed people increased by 2.9 per cent year on year to 520,763, compared with 506,318 in the corresponding quarter of 2025.

The overall employment rate rose to 63.2 per cent from 62.6 per cent.

The labour force expanded by 2.1 per cent to 540,130 people, representing 65.6 per cent of the population. A year earlier, the labour force stood at 528,981 people, with a participation rate of 65.4 per cent.

Gender differences

The male labour force rose to 283,680, although the participation rate edged down to 70.9 per cent from 71.1 per cent.

The female labour force increased to 256,450, while the participation rate rose to 60.5 per cent from 60 per cent.

Female employment increased by 4.4 per cent to 246,895 people, raising the employment rate to 58.3 per cent from 57.2 per cent.

Male employment rose by 1.5 per cent to 273,868, with the employment rate reaching 68.5 per cent, compared with 68.3 per cent in the second quarter of 2025.

Unemployment

The number of unemployed people fell by 14.5 per cent to 19,367, from 22,663 a year earlier.

Male unemployment declined to 9,812 people, with the unemployment rate falling to 3.5 per cent from 3.9 per cent. The number of unemployed women dropped to 9,555, while the female unemployment rate fell to 3.7 per cent from 4.7 per cent.
