Nicosia, Cyprus. Data Protection Commissioner Maria Christofidou said cameras had been discovered in toilets at restaurants and other premises, describing their installation as strictly prohibited.

She said her office will begin on-site inspections of catering and entertainment venues next month, following information that surveillance cameras had been installed in toilets.

Planned inspections

Speaking on Politis radio on Wednesday, Christofidou said she had personally witnessed cases involving cameras in toilets.

She said issues had also been identified at certain hotels, while stressing that most businesses operate lawfully and have submitted the required impact assessments.

Christofidou said her office has already planned the way inspections will be conducted. She attributed the delay in starting them partly to staff shortages, noting that new officers had only recently been recruited.

Surveillance in public spaces

The discussion also covered a request by Paphos municipality to install cameras in parks and public spaces to curb vandalism.

Christofidou said the municipalities law allows local authorities to install surveillance systems in public spaces, including parks, for crime prevention, but does not permit unchecked or widespread installation.
