Demetriou steps up Disy campaign in Nicosia, criticises rivals over unclear positions

Nicosia, Cyprus. Disy president Annita Demetriou intensified her party’s pre-election campaign on Saturday, accusing political opponents of avoiding clear positions on major national issues.

Criticism of opponents’ campaign positions

Speaking at a party youth rally with a week remaining before voters go to the polls, Demetriou said several parties and candidates had not presented clear proposals on the Cyprus issue and other key political matters. She described the campaign as “a battle of values” and said the political climate had become increasingly polarised.

Disy stance on the Cyprus issue

Demetriou said Disy sought “a solution without occupying troops, without guarantees and without invasive rights.” She said the party remained committed to what she called a responsible and realistic approach, adding that “true patriotism means fighting for a free and safe homeland” rather than “distributing cheap slogans” or “investing in division by serving Ankara’s narrative.”

Concerns about political discourse and public debate

Demetriou criticised the tone of the political debate, accusing some forces of promoting “toxicity, screams, fake news, division and unsubstantiated accusations.” She said some were trying to turn politics into a spectacle and the new parliament into a “reality show,” arguing that “politics is not TikTok” and that politics should be about responsibility.

Election framed as a decision on the country’s future

Demetriou said the elections were not only about parliamentary seats but about the future direction of the country.
