EAC says it cannot rule out outages but says measures taken to safeguard power supply

Nicosia, Cyprus. The Electricity Authority (EAC) said on Thursday it cannot entirely rule out power outages but has taken all necessary steps to prevent them. Chairman Giorgos Petrou made the remarks after meeting the leader of Disy, alongside representatives of EAC-affiliated trade unions.

Power supply and substations

Petrou said that if two substations continue to operate normally, there should be no issue with adequate electricity supply. He noted that the two substations are powered by generators that are 40 years old.

He said the EAC has carried out necessary upkeep to ensure the smooth running of the substations. The organisation plans to begin installing new generators at the substations starting in 2028.

Petrou said the EAC has increased production by at least 80 megawatts this year and said he believes there will not be any problems, while adding that the EAC would assess how to respond if something unexpected arises.

Electricity prices

Asked about electricity prices, Petrou said there are two ways for the state-run utility to bring down prices: the operation of solar parks and the use of natural gas for power generation. He said that until the EAC acquires solar parks on what he described as a serious scale, the organisation does not anticipate price reductions.
