Akrotiri, Cyprus. New antennas at the British bases in Akrotiri must not be installed before a full environmental assessment and a public debate, the federation of environmental organisations (Opok) said on Wednesday. The federation raised concerns about potential effects on the peninsula’s birds, wetlands and coastal habitats, as well as public health and residents’ quality of life.

Call for comprehensive studies

Opok said plans for new antennas at Merra Akrotiri raise serious environmental concerns. It has sent a memorandum to the House environment committee calling for proper studies and assessments covering the entire project.

The federation also called for transparency and a substantive public debate involving residents of the area.

Pressures on habitats and wetlands

The Akrotiri peninsula is already under pressure from military installations and manoeuvres, telecommunications systems, infrastructure expansion and large-scale developments in the broader region, the federation said.

It said habitat loss and the resulting displacement of wildlife, particularly birds nesting in the area, must be taken into account.

The federation also warned that the wetlands are particularly sensitive to changes in water quantity and quality, which would be affected by further works.

Access to information and cooperation

Opok demanded full access to studies and information concerning the area. It called on the authorities and the British bases to cooperate to protect the environment for residents and wildlife.
