Limassol, Cyprus. Visual artist Evelyn Anastasiou’s TWELFTH NIGHT will connect Pattihio Municipal Theatre, its public courtyard and The Edit Gallery for an evening combining contemporary punk with the post-war film musical. The exhibition runs from October 24 to November 14, with opening-night activities scheduled for 6.30pm-10pm.

Three spaces, one event

The project invites visitors to circulate freely among the three neighbouring venues in central Limassol, with The Edit Gallery directly across from the theatre. For one evening, Anastasiou brings theatrical illusion together with DIY culture, linking an institutional setting with public space and recasting a familiar part of the city as a temporary cultural landscape.

Its name references Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, or What You Will. Drawing on traditions of misrule, disguise and confusion over identity, the play briefly reverses hierarchies and relaxes social rules. Anastasiou’s work takes a comparable approach, disrupting customary roles so that identities and functions can change.

Musicals meet punk

TWELFTH NIGHT places two apparently conflicting forms of shared cultural expression alongside each other, giving music the central role.

In the project’s framing, post-war film musicals turn anxiety and social unease into song, dance and communal spectacle. Contemporary punk challenges that sanitised view of reality through noise, directness and a DIY ethos, confronting warfare and power structures.

By joining these forms, Anastasiou seeks to suspend everyday reality briefly and offer audiences another way to coexist. Set against a present shaped by conflict and division, the work proposes a shared experience opening towards a different choreography.

Finnish band’s Cyprus debut

The event will feature the first performance in Cyprus by HAUTAUSTOIMISTO, a hardcore punk ‘n’ roll group based in Tampere, Finland.

The band’s involvement is integral to Anastasiou’s continuing research on Finnish punk, particularly the Puntala-Rock festival in Lempäälä. Within the work, their presence turns the stage into a pedestal, directly connecting Limassol audiences with the spirit of Tampere’s punk community.
