Larnaca, Cyprus. The Turkish Cypriot religious endowment foundation Evkaf has expressed disappointment over a beer festival held in the square where the historic Zouhouri mosque complex is located.

Evkaf calls for respect for site

In a statement carried by Turkish Cypriot online media, Evkaf said the historical site and its religious identity should be respected. It said residents of the area had asked for the event to be held elsewhere.

Evkaf called on Larnaca municipality and the relevant authorities to show greater sensitivity to the monument’s character when organising future events.

Conservation and square redevelopment

The complex was previously among the cultural heritage sites selected for conservation through the bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, with projects supported by the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

Conservation work at Zouhouri Tekke was completed in February 2022. A completion event covering both Zouhouri Tekke and Tuzla Hammam took place on March 23, 2023.

The wider redevelopment of Zouhouri square was a separate Larnaca municipality project, inaugurated in January 2023.
