Nicosia, Cyprus. Famagusta district leads the rollout of air conditioning in primary schools, with 65 per cent fully equipped, according to education ministry figures released on Friday. Progress remains uneven nationwide, particularly in primary education.

Primary school rollout

Paphos has fully operational air conditioning in 16 per cent of its primary schools, while 62 per cent are still awaiting installation.

In Nicosia, 24 per cent of primary schools are fully operational, while 30 per cent remain at the planning stage.

Limassol has reached 46 per cent of primary schools, followed by Larnaca with 39 per cent and Famagusta with 65 per cent.

Secondary schools

The gap is smaller among older pupils, with most middle and high schools either already equipped with air conditioning or at the final stage of installation.

All high schools in Larnaca have working air conditioning, while 90 per cent of high schools in Limassol are operational.

Infrastructure requirements

Education Minister Athena Michaelidou said the government remained committed to installing air conditioning in every school, but said the work must be completed safely.

She said electrical infrastructure was the main obstacle at certain schools, as older systems cannot always support the additional power required by air conditioning units. Electrical upgrades are therefore needed before units can be used.

Some schools also require substations to provide sufficient electricity for the new equipment.
