Forestry department urges caution as avoidable fires raise wildfire risk
The forestry department said recent fires were caused by human activity and urged the public to report smoke, fires and suspected arson.

Nicosia, Cyprus. The forestry department said on Tuesday that fires over recent days were caused by human activity and could have been avoided, urging the public to exercise extreme caution amid high temperatures, prolonged drought and winds.
Fire risks and restrictions
The department said the fires were linked to tools and machinery that emit heat and sparks, agricultural work and other activities in rural areas.
From June 1 to September 30, the use of tools, machinery and equipment to cut or weld metal or other materials that generate heat, flames or sparks is prohibited in and around forest areas without written consent from the forestry department.
People seeking a permit can contact the forestry station nearest to the area where the work will be carried out.
Work in residential areas of cities and in industrial areas does not require a permit.
Reporting suspected arson
The forestry department also expressed concern over the malicious lighting of fires and called on the public to remain alert and report suspicious actions or behaviour that may indicate arson.
It said citizens’ cooperation was important for both preventing and investigating such cases, adding that forest protection was everyone’s responsibility.
In case of smoke or fire, the public can contact the forestry department on 1407 or the fire brigade on 112.
