Azau, Russia. Four Cypriots reached the 5,642-metre summit of Mount Elbrus on 23 August, raising the flags of Cyprus and the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society.

The group dedicated the expedition to people currently fighting cancer and to the memory of those who have died from the disease.

Expedition route

The climbers arrived in the Russian village of Azau on 19 August. The following day, they began acclimatisation by ascending Mount Cheget to an altitude of 3,461 metres.

On 21 August, the group climbed to the Pastukhov Rocks on Mount Elbrus, reaching approximately 4,700 metres.

Their summit attempt started at 10pm on 22 August and concluded at 9.45am on 23 August.

Preparation and dedication

Mountain Expeditions Cyprus told en.philenews that the group’s interest in mountains, nature and adventure had led them to take on Elbrus after climbing Mont Blanc and other significant peaks last year.

The climbers said the expedition was dedicated to the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society in recognition of the support it provides to people across the island. They said cancer had affected people close to the group.

They also said Mount Elbrus required greater acclimatisation than their previous expeditions and involved exposure to rapidly changing weather conditions.

The team prepared by studying the route, maps, navigation methods and previous accidents on the mountain. They described reaching the summit after months of preparation as an unforgettable moment.

The group said raising the Anti-Cancer Society flag was particularly emotional, symbolising support for people with cancer, their families and those who have died.
