Nicosia, Cyprus. Gesy will begin covering the anti-obesity medicine Mounjaro for adults with obesity and Type II diabetes on Thursday, according to the health insurance organisation. A revised protocol governing Ozempic treatment for Type II diabetes will take effect the same day.

Coverage and treatment protocols

The organisation said coverage for tirzepatide, Mounjaro’s active ingredient, would follow approved protocols. Under the revised rules for Ozempic, whose active ingredient is semaglutide, the medicine will become the first-choice diabetes treatment irrespective of a patient’s body weight.

Approval and dispensing arrangements

For either medicine, the organisation said, patients must ask their doctor to seek pre-approval through Gesy’s information system. Initially, Mounjaro will be dispensed exclusively by hospital pharmacies, whereas Ozempic can be obtained on prescription from any pharmacy.

Prescribing will be limited to specialists in endocrinology, specialist pathology and geriatrics, alongside designated practitioners of adult general medicine.

Existing requests and approvals

The organisation said applications awaiting a decision from the committee assessing individual medicine requests would not require resubmission. Patients whose Mounjaro treatment had already received approval from the relevant committees will move into the protocol-based system.
