Athens, Greece. Greece repaid €2.5 billion to the European Financial Stability Facility on Thursday, using proceeds from the reprivatisation of Greek banks previously supported by the Hellenic Financial Stability Fund. The bail-out mechanism announced the repayment on October 2, 2026.

Banking recovery and debt reduction

European Financial Stability Facility managing director Pierre Gramegna said the repayment was another clear indication of Greece’s progress in strengthening its economy and financial system.

He said the reprivatisation proceeds tangibly reflected the Greek banking sector’s recovery following the crisis. Using part of those proceeds to repay the facility reduced Greece’s public debt and sent a signal of confidence to markets, he said, describing the development as a distinctly positive outcome for Greece.

Revenues and contractual repayment rights

Greece informed the European Financial Stability Facility and the European Stability Mechanism on September 1, 2026, that the Hellenic Corporation of Assets and Participations held approximately €4 billion in revenues linked to the Hellenic Financial Stability Fund, following their merger.

Both the European Financial Stability Facility and the European Stability Mechanism have contractual repayment rights over assets of the Hellenic Corporation of Assets and Participations derived from bank recapitalisation operations connected to their funding.

The European Financial Stability Facility exercised those rights over the €2.5 billion. The repayment was allocated specifically to the facility because its loans carry higher costs than those of the European Stability Mechanism.

Both institutions retain their contractual rights over the remaining loans.
