Nicosia, Cyprus. A Greek Cypriot woman appeared before a court in northern Nicosia on Monday accused of stealing cosmetic products and orange juice from the Erulku hypermarket in Neo Chorio.

The court ordered her remanded at the north’s central prison for a period not exceeding seven days.

Alleged theft

Turkish Cypriot police officer Mahmut Kolcu told the court that the alleged theft occurred shortly after midday on Tuesday last week.

He said the woman allegedly took two boxes of under-eye products, three canisters of hair concealer, three nail polishes and two bottles of orange juice.

The cosmetic products had a combined value of 2,088.93TL (€37.19), while the orange juice was valued at 85.70TL (€1.53), Kolcu said.

Arrest and court order

Police were informed of the incident on Thursday last week. A review of the hypermarket’s CCTV footage allegedly showed the woman taking the products and entering her vehicle.

She was arrested on Sunday while attempting to cross northward through the Dherynia crossing point. Kolcu said that, after being shown the CCTV footage, she admitted to the offence and said she had already taken the items to the Republic.

The woman told the court that her husband was in another country and that their young daughter would be left alone if she were detained for a prolonged period, which she said would negatively affect the child.

Judge Zehra Yalkut Bilgec ordered her remand for up to seven days.
