Limassol, Cyprus. The Edit Gallery will host Carriers, a solo exhibition by Hannah Rowan featuring a new body of ceramic sculptures developed during research and production in Limassol. The exhibition opens on September 18 and runs until October 17.

Exploring carrying and care

At the centre of Carriers is the act of carrying: to hold, contain, protect and nourish. Rowan’s clay torsos take the form of vessels, breastplates and protective shells, examining relationships between bodies and the environments they inhabit.

Drawing on pregnancy, breastfeeding and the transition into motherhood, the works consider structures through which bodies sustain more-than-human life. References to placentas and milk ducts merge with botanical and marine forms, with ribs becoming aloe vera leaves, milk ducts blooming like flowers, and branching patterns recalling roots and nervous systems.

Body, environment and material

Through these connections, Rowan extends questions of care and interdependence beyond maternal experience to exchanges that sustain living beings.

Protection and vulnerability coexist throughout the series. The sculptures evoke armour shaped around the female body, while their ceramic material remains fragile. Lustrous, shell-like glazes recall oysters, whose shells accumulate traces of the waters they inhabit.

Both body and shell are presented as records of their surroundings, holding evidence of a world from which they cannot be entirely separate.

Exhibition details

Carriers continues Rowan’s investigation into bodies, water and material transformation. Moving between anatomy and plant life, armour and vessel, the exhibition considers what bodies carry, what they pass on, and how caring for one body is linked to conditions in the living world.

The opening night will take place from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. The Edit Gallery will be open from 3pm to 7pm on Wednesdays to Fridays and from 10am to 1pm on Saturdays. More information is available by calling 25-251710 or visiting www.theeditgallery.com.
