Nicosia, Cyprus. The hunters association on Tuesday denounced what it described as harassment of legal hunters by activists, saying such actions create unnecessary tensions and could endanger those involved.

It said hunters must comply with legislation and safety rules but should be able to carry out legal activities without intimidation, obstruction or harassment.

Association statement

The association said it had for years identified and denounced what it described as the harassment of legal hunters by individuals or organised groups during hunting activities.

It condemned actions intended to disturb legal hunters, saying they created unnecessary tensions, endangered the safety of those involved and did not contribute to social peace or mutual respect.

The association also reiterated its opposition to poaching and illegal hunting, saying it supported the effective enforcement of legislation by the competent authorities.

Parliamentary debate

The statement followed comments on Monday by ELAM MP and House environment committee chairman Linos Papayiannis, who said he would refuse to invite anti-hunting activists to an upcoming committee debate.

Papayiannis said their conduct had gone beyond the limits of what was tolerable and permissible.

In response, the group appealed to MPs on Tuesday to strengthen environmental efforts and protect wildlife, saying lawmakers should not be misled by actions intended to disrupt cooperation between NGOs, police and state authorities.
