Tehran, Iran. Iran and Oman are still working on the details of an agreement concerning the Strait of Hormuz, a senior Iranian source said on Wednesday, despite comments by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards that the two countries had reached an understanding.

The source said no final agreement had been concluded, while the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said agreements had been reached on the countries’ shares of the strait’s waters and revenues.

Continuing negotiations

“An agreement with Oman over the Strait of Hormuz has not been finalised,” the senior Iranian source told Reuters, adding that talks were continuing on the details of an accord.

Iran and Oman have held intermittent talks for weeks on controlling traffic through the strait, which handled one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments before the war began in February.

Most shipping through the waterway has since been shut down, contributing to higher global energy prices, as Tehran and Washington have sought to assert control over the channel through separate blockades.

Revolutionary Guards comments

Hossein Mohebbi, a spokesperson for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said Iran and Oman had reached an agreement on their shares of the territory and revenues.

“The Strait of Hormuz belongs to Iran and the country of Oman,” Mohebbi said in comments published by Iranian state media. “We have been in negotiations with Oman for about a month, and we have reached results that are acceptable to both sides.”

He said agreements had been reached on the share of each country in the strait’s waters and on Iran’s and Oman’s revenue shares.

It was not immediately clear at what stage of the negotiations those agreements had been reached. Iran said earlier this month that a deal on the strait was close.

Conditions for reopening

The IRGC spokesperson, reflecting Tehran’s official position, said the strait would not reopen unless the United States met Iran’s conditions under an interim ceasefire agreement reached in June before later unravelling.

Iran’s conditions include ending the US blockade of Iranian ports, providing compensation and removing sanctions.
