Lefkara mayor raises safety concerns over Skarinou-Kofinou road
Lefkara mayor Sophocles Sophocleous has called for urgent measures to improve pedestrian safety on the old Nicosia-Limassol road.

Lefkara, Cyprus. Lefkara mayor Sophocles Sophocleous has raised concerns over accident risks on the old Nicosia-Limassol intercity road between Skarinou and Kofinou, citing increased pedestrian use of the route.
In a letter to police chief Themistos Arnaoutis, he called for immediate measures and said a meeting with relevant services would be held to address the issue.
Pedestrian traffic
Sophocleous said the road is used daily, particularly during evening hours, primarily by residents of the Kofinou reception centre.
While recognising the need for people to travel to meet their daily needs, he said frequent pedestrian traffic on the road significantly increases the risk of accidents.
Infrastructure concerns
The mayor expressed particular concern about weekends, when traffic increases and weddings and other events take place in the area.
He said existing infrastructure was insufficient because of a lack of parking spaces, lighting and pavements.
Call for measures
Sophocleous said he had contacted the Kofinou police department, which informed him that it was aware of the issue.
He said addressing the problem could not be limited to police action and called for the road to be redesigned, alongside preventive and enforcement measures. He said protecting human life must be the priority, regardless of country of origin or other characteristics.
