Limassol, Cyprus. Limassol district court on Saturday remanded a 47-year-old Georgian national in custody for eight days on suspicion of attempting to murder a 44-year-old man in Mouttayiaka. Police requested the order to continue their investigation into the attack, which occurred at about 8am on Thursday at a construction site.

Suspect’s account

The suspect handed himself in at Limassol police headquarters on Friday morning.

In a written statement to investigators, he said the injured man, also a Georgian national, approached him at work and insulted him over personal differences.

He alleged that the man then punched him to the ground. The suspect said he “accidentally” picked up a drywall cutter and swung his arms from side to side to protect himself.

He admitted that the man’s injuries were caused by the cutter, which he said he threw away. Officers found the cutter in a rubbish bin on a nearby street.

The suspect maintained that he “never meant to injure or kill” and “acted out of fear for his life”.

Injured man’s statement pending

The injured man was initially unable to give a statement because of the severity of his condition. Police subsequently had difficulty finding an interpreter and planned to take his statement after the court hearing.

He is receiving treatment under guard at a private hospital.
