Episkopi, Cyprus. A 76-year-old man was killed on Wednesday after a minibus struck him as he attempted to remove a refrigerator that had fallen from his vehicle on the Limassol-Paphos highway.

The collision occurred near the Episkopi tunnel, before the exit to Paramali, within the British bases area.

Collision investigation

The man had been travelling in a double-cabin vehicle with his grandson when the refrigerator fell onto the road. According to British base police, he turned back, exited the vehicle and attempted to remove the appliance from the carriageway.

A minibus carrying passengers to Paphos airport then struck both the double-cabin vehicle and the 76-year-old man. His death was confirmed at the scene.

The victim’s grandson was not injured.

Police appeal

The minibus driver was arrested and underwent alcohol and drug testing. Police are expected to take his statement, as well as statements from passengers and other potential witnesses.

British police and their traffic accident investigation team are investigating the collision, while Limassol traffic police attended to assist with traffic management.

British base police appealed for witnesses and anyone with relevant dashcam footage to come forward.

Road closure

The Episkopi tunnel was closed for several hours in the direction of Paphos, with traffic diverted through the old Limassol-Paphos Road via Kantou. The tunnel has since reopened.
