Nicosia, Cyprus. Andreas Mavroyiannis, the former chief negotiator who contested the presidency in 2023, said on Wednesday he would announce by January at the latest whether he intends to stand in 2028. He said his decision would not await Akel’s selection of a candidate.

Decision ahead of Akel’s selection

In an appearance on Alpha TV, Mavroyiannis described support from Akel as “highly desirable”, but said he would make his own decision before the party settled on its nominee.

Akel is expected to settle its choice by next spring. Its candidate is due to be selected during next year’s first quarter, with approval to follow at an extraordinary party conference.

Mavroyiannis said he respected the party’s procedures and understood its preference for March or April. He rejected the suggestion that his timetable put excessive pressure on Akel, arguing that an early announcement would give the party time to consider whether to support him.

He also reported meeting Akel secretary-general Stefanos Stefanou three weeks earlier.

Momentum and support to determine candidacy

Mavroyiannis said his decision would rest on whether the momentum surrounding a possible bid continued and on his perceived electoral prospects.

An announcement made in January would not be final, he said. He explained that withdrawal would remain an option if momentum weakened, Akel took another course or other political forces withheld support, and his polling stood at 5 per-cent by the summer.

If Akel selected someone else but his own momentum remained strong, he said he would pursue support from other parties.
