Nicosia, Cyprus. Medieval celebrations, circus performances, food festivals and community gatherings feature in this week’s events across Cyprus. The programme ranges from Ayia Napa’s four-day festival to the first ArtCargo Festival in Nicosia.

Medieval celebrations in Ayia Napa and Pyrga

Ayia Napa, a popular holiday destination, is highlighting its cultural offerings beyond summer tourism with the return of the Ayia Napa Medieval Festival. Continuing until Sunday, the four-day event brings overseas medieval groups and local performers to the streets surrounding Giorgos Seferis Cultural Centre Square.

The programme combines folklore, processions, elaborate costumes, craft displays and live musical performances, drawing on stories from earlier centuries.

Pyrga will host the third edition of its Renaissance Fair on October 17. Activities run from 3pm to 10pm, with historical reenactments, music, crafts and parades.

At 4pm, Queen Catherine Cornaro and her entourage are scheduled to head the main procession, joined by medieval fighters and the Italian flag-bearing group Sbandieratori Castiglion Fiorentino. Other attractions include medieval combat, archery, riding horses, traditional games and handicrafts.

ArtCargo makes its Nicosia debut

ArtCargo Festival arrives in Nicosia for the first time with a ten-day programme from October 16 to October 25. Admission is free, with acrobatics, circus acts and participatory activities taking place across streets and squares in the city centre.

France’s L’Immediat will present its participatory performance at Nicosia Municipal Gardens on the opening day, with sessions at 3.30pm and 5pm. Panos Malactos’ Parametric Deep, a project involving water, media and installation, launches at 7pm.

Street food, music and Sunday markets

Paphos will host the Seaside Street Food Festival – Autumn Edition at Medieval Castle Square from October 16 to 18. Food stalls and live entertainment form the programme throughout the weekend.

Seasonal pop-ups are also returning. Misfit Sundays opens its new season with Sunday Sessions Vol 1 on October 18 at Misfit Union Kitchen, in Nicosia’s Engomi industrial area. The gathering offers street food, drinks and DJ sets by Marcos Stereo, with children and dogs welcome.

In the Solea valley, The Mills hosts another Solea Valley Rock Market on Sunday, from 10.30am to 5.30pm. Stalls will offer handmade goods, food treats and locally grown fresh produce.

This edition has a rock theme, with classics spanning the 60s to the 00s and a Best Rock T-Shirt competition. Activities also include workshops for children, a scavenger hunt and an area for stacking rocks.

Police memoir and horror cinema

Former Flying Squad officer Barry Appleton will launch his memoir, Twentieth Century Cop, on October 15 at Stage One Theatre in Emba, Paphos. Drawing on stories from his police career, the event includes readings, book signing and an opportunity to meet the former detective and author.

In Deryneia, ProjectFilms101 continues the seasonal horror theme with Horror Cinema Vol.2 on October 17. Avenue Garage will host screenings of three horror films, with admission restricted to audiences over 18.

Charity quiz and community workshops

Following its summer pause, Nostalgia Quiz Night resumes in Nicosia on Friday, October 16. Organisers are partnering with the NGO Voice For Autism, whose activities will receive all net proceeds.

Teams will gather at Antonakis Music Hall from 8.30pm to compete for the leading prizes in a pop-culture quiz centred on nostalgia. Chris Papadopoulos will host the event in English.

Gardens of the Future will also welcome visitors on Sunday for Care & Connect Day, an event open to every age group. The tucked-away garden community centre opens at 11am, with gardening, tote-bag crafts and joint workshops for parents and children on the programme.
