Kyiv, Ukraine. A Reuters witness reported missile strikes on Kyiv early Thursday, while Ukraine launched hundreds of drones towards Moscow overnight. The attacks continued despite renewed US efforts to negotiate an end to the war.

Casualties and infrastructure damage in Ukraine

Authorities in Kyiv said Russian strikes injured 15 people, damaged metro infrastructure on the Southern Bridge across the Dnipro River and limited traffic on the crossing. An earlier attack on Wednesday evening had injured six people in the capital.

In northeastern Ukraine, Kharkiv Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov reported on Telegram that a Russian strike left one woman dead and four other people injured.

A local official said on Telegram that a drone struck energy infrastructure near Kremenchuk in the Poltava region, but provided no further details.

Kremenchuk, an important industrial centre on the Dnipro River, has one of Ukraine’s largest oil refineries. Russian forces have repeatedly attacked the area, including a strike in 2022 that killed at least 21 people at a crowded shopping mall.

Drone attacks near Moscow and in Lipetsk

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Telegram that 630 drones had been launched towards the capital overnight and that two people were injured nearby. He said most of the drones were intercepted at long range.

Governor Igor Artamonov reported on Telegram that drones struck residential apartment blocks and a medical facility in Lipetsk, injuring a man. The city, about 400 km (250 miles) south of Moscow, hosts a major steel plant.

US-mediated negotiations

The exchanges followed meetings this week between US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and the presidents of Ukraine and Russia, Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Vladimir Putin, as Washington sought to mediate an end to the fighting.

On Wednesday, Zelenskiy said Ukraine backed a US proposal to convene negotiators from Ukraine, Russia and the United States for three-way discussions at the earliest opportunity. The Kremlin said Putin had agreed to restart peace negotiations with Kyiv under US mediation, potentially as early as next month.

Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, eight years after annexing the Crimea peninsula from Ukraine. The resulting war has become Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War Two.
