Nicosia general hospital opens €4.1 million upgraded emergency department
President Nikos Christodoulides inaugurated the upgraded emergency department on Monday, highlighting patient care, staff facilities and wider healthcare investment.

Nicosia, Cyprus. The renovated accident and emergency department at Nicosia general hospital was inaugurated on Monday following a €4.1 million upgrade. The government said the work aimed to strengthen patient care and improve conditions for medical personnel.
Facilities for relatives and staff
At the inauguration, President Nikos Christodoulides drew attention to a designated space for relatives to receive information about patients and a rest area for medical personnel.
He said healthcare workers needed appropriate conditions because they routinely made difficult decisions while facing sustained pressure. The government had a responsibility to provide a suitable working environment that would also help improve their performance, he added.
Christodoulides recalled two visits to the hospital with his daughters after becoming president, describing the response on each occasion as exemplary.
Healthcare investment and further upgrades
The president said his administration was funding healthcare infrastructure throughout Cyprus to respond more effectively to patients’ needs, especially those requiring emergency treatment.
He said government projects receiving EU co-funding and scheduled for cabinet approval in September 2027 would have a combined value exceeding €3.5 billion. Healthcare would be among the priorities.
Christodoulides also said the government needed to demonstrate through practical action that health and education were its foremost priorities and that it regarded spending on both sectors as investment.
Turning to improvements elsewhere in the hospital, he cited the fourth-floor expansion incorporating the neurological clinic and stroke unit. An infectious disease unit would be the next step, he said.
