Limassol, Cyprus. The Limassol Municipal Arts Centre – Apothikes Papadaki will present “Nikos Kouroussis: labyrinths”, a survey exhibition of the artist’s work, from Friday, September 4, until October 4.

Exhibition overview

The exhibition brings together painting, video, functional sculpture, installations, archival material and film footage, tracing recurring imagery, ideas, media and processes across different periods of Nikos Kouroussis’ practice.

“labyrinths” takes its title from a body of Kouroussis’ work and uses the labyrinth as a narrative approach. Rather than following a chronological sequence, the exhibition develops through associations, returns, encounters and reassemblages, using thematic cycles and archival traces to connect different stages of the artist’s work.

The presentation focuses on Kouroussis’ interest in sculptural forms and space, imagery and technologies. His practice developed during a period in which digital technologies became increasingly present in artistic creation and experimentation, while painting, installations and public artworks remained central to his work.

Works and archival material

A series of drawings dating from 1962 to 1994, alongside clippings, archival material and works from several decades, will present recurring motifs in the artist’s work.

The exhibition includes works from the series “labyrinth” (1970-), “rainbow” (1974-), “metamorphosis” (1986-), “Icarus” (1987-) and “functional sculpture” (1985-). A new commission will recreate a labyrinth work from 1970.

Parallel programme

The opening event will include the launch of the catalogue raisonné at 6pm with AG Leventis Foundation director Loukia Loizou Hadjigavriel, followed by a welcoming speech at 7pm by Limassol mayor Yiannis Armeftis.

A walkthrough of Kouroussis’ scenographic work at the Cyprus Theatre Museum is scheduled for September 11 at 6pm. A creative workshop for teenagers and adults will take place on September 16 at 6pm, with a €10 participation fee.

A walkthrough of the Nikos Kouroussis Foundation Museum and Sculpture Park in Mitsero will be held on September 19. On September 20, the curatorial team of Marina Christodoulidou and Christina Lambrou will lead exhibition tours at 11am and 5pm.

The exhibition book launch and discussion will take place on September 30 at 6pm.
