Okypy emergency teams remain on standby for weekend incidents

Nicosia, Cyprus. Emergency response teams at public hospitals and the Okypy ambulance service will remain on standby over the weekend to handle any emergency, Okypy spokesman Charalambos Charilaou said on Friday.

He said services are appropriately staffed to respond to traffic accidents, strokes, heart attacks and other incidents.

Summer-related cases

Charilaou said public hospitals sometimes record an increase in patients during the summer, including cases of heat stress, minor accidents and sunburn associated with very high temperatures.

Emergency response centres and the ambulance service are staffed with the necessary doctors and other personnel, he said.

Road safety

Traffic accidents remain a year-round concern, Charilaou said, adding that higher traffic volumes during summer months, particularly on certain days, can increase the likelihood of accidents.

He said services were prepared for any incident and expressed hope that people would travel safely to their destinations.

A&E activity

Data from accident and emergency units is recorded daily, with no significant change in either the number or nature of cases compared with previous years, Charilaou said.

He added that A&E units have experienced increased activity because of summer leave among staff and specialist doctors in the private sector.

Many people have attended A&E units with heat exhaustion or heat stroke, although no patients are currently hospitalised for these conditions, he said.
